Mechanical Handling Engineer

Our growing team is looking for a Mechanical Engineer, with a background in one or multiple of mechanical handling, remote operations or robotics, who thrives on challenging problems and is looking for the next stage of their career. The role shall involve working on complex design projects with the opportunity to rapidly move on to leadership positions, heading up projects and guiding junior engineers new to the industry.

Do you want to solve the energy industries most important mechanical handling challenges? We need innovative engineers to design systems to package radioactive waste for decommissioning, handle fuel within new build reactors and to develop maintenance capability for fusion reactors. We’re currently engaged in the deployment of collaborative, industrial and mobile robotics solutions to take people out of harm’s way on nuclear generation and decommissioning projects and are seeking engineers to grow our capability in this area.

We need a self-starter who can deliver multiple projects at the same time, working closely with clients and other areas of the business, to capture requirements, set up projects and deliver right-first-time solutions for the most challenging problems in the energy industry.

The role is within the Nuclear Assets business in Atkins SNC-Lavalin, and shall support a wide range of clients across the energy market including:

• Currently Generating Nuclear Power Stations
• Nuclear New Build
• Nuclear Decommissioning
• Nuclear New Technologies (Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and Fusion)
• Net Zero - Offshore Wind, Carbon Capture, Energy Storage and Transmission

The constant in this role is the challenging nature of the jobs and the chance to provide innovative solutions to a range of problems for several appreciative clients.

The Role:

As an engineer within the business, you will work within small to medium sized multidisciplinary teams which may be based at client offices or plant sites. You will have the ability to work within those teams such that you can effectively support and deliver tasks for multiple workstreams, have a level of commercial awareness and be confident in your ability to deliver to time, quality and cost.

Experience and Skills:

We are looking for individuals with the following experience:

Essential experience -

• Degree qualified in a relevant engineering / technical discipline.
• Experience designing mechanical handling or robotics systems.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Good oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to write accurate, detailed and concise technical reports (e.g., design substantiations, basis of analysis, safety case support references).
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Comfortable with engaging with existing and prospective clients, working at their sites, and investing time in understanding their issues, objectives and processes.

Other desirable experience -

• Experience in the specification, design and implementation of mechanical handling equipment / heavy machinery such as cranes, hoists, grabs, conveyers and turntables.
• Experience in the specification, design and implementation of automation or robotic technologies.
• Experience with working in a safety critical and heavily regulated environment such as Nuclear power generation/decommissioning industries.
• Chartered with a relevant professional institute (or approaching application for registration).
• Experience in working with design codes such as BS EN13001, BS 2573 or ASME B30.
• Familiar with the Machinery Directive and CE/UKCA marking requirements.
• CAD, preferably Autodesk Inventor, for 3D modelling and drawing production.
• Experience in authoring bids.

Prior Nuclear experience is not essential, we are keen to consider applicants who wish to apply their skills gained within other industries.
