As part of the EDF Group, Cyclife is expanding its specialist nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management business.  As part of our continued growth we are seeking a dedicated and experienced Radiation Protection Adviser to join the team at our nuclear licensed site near Workington, Cumbria.

A vacancy has arisen for an experience, motivated individual to join our Technical & Compliance team.  A minimum of 5 years’ experience in facilities involved in the management of radioactive wastes is required. Reporting directly to the Head of Technical & Compliance, you will be part of our core capability based at our nuclear licensed site in west Cumbria, although occasional business travel will be required in support of Cyclife’s business throughout the UK. You will have strong interpersonal and influencing skills, have the ability to interact with Customers and build on a good customer network is essential.

Main Responsibilities

You are ideally a certified Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA). You must have experience of working with low level radioactive waste in the nuclear industry and have a passion for positive and responsible waste management.

Applications from individuals currently without a valid RPA certificate but with relevant transferrable radioactive waste experience are welcomed, but you must possess the required underpinning technical knowledge and be capable of generating your portfolio of evidence ready for submission within a timeframe agreed with the Company.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining and improving arrangements for compliance against the Ionising Radiations Regulations and industry good and best practice.
  • Providing radiation protection advice to Cyclife
  • Providing practical radiation protection advice to Cyclife Operations and Health Physics
  • The potential for line management responsibility of the Health Physics function.
  • Training, coaching and mentoring staff on good radiation protection practise.
  • Participating in and leading on the development of ALARP and dose assessment studies. Support to the production of documentation in support of contracts and tenders.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance within Cyclife UK Limited Management Systems
  • Liaise with suppliers, clients and regulators as required.

You will be operating as part of a multi-disciplined team alongside RWAs and DGSAs and will be expected to be involved in the following for a large part of your time:

  • Reviewing Customer waste information and providing input into treatment and disposability studies
  • Undertaking technical assessment of low level radioactive waste to determine the most appropriate treatment and / or disposal route, and managing the compliant consignment.
  • Providing radioactive waste management advice and support to all of Cyclife’s business areas.

Essential skills, aptitudes and experience

  • Science-based degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Certified Radiation Protection Adviser (or in possession of underpinning technical knowledge sufficient to meet the core knowledge criteria).
  • At least 5 years’ professional experience in a facility involved in the management of radioactive wastes. 
  • Good written and oral communication and presentational skills, such that information provided is delivered in a readily understandable format.
  • The ability to liaise / communicate with staff at all levels across the organisation to reach agreement on work specification planning and delivery requirements.
  • Experience of interacting with Regulators.
  • Sound knowledge of health physics instruments
  • An extremely high attention to detail.

    Desirable skills, aptitudes and experience

     

  • Chartered Waste Manager with sound knowledge and experience in the management of hazardous wastes.
  • Detailed understanding of radioactive and non-radioactive characterisation

Candidates selected for interview will be expected to deliver a 10 minute technical presentation on radiation protection and the Ionising Radiations Regulations to the interview panel; the topic will be confirmed prior to the interview.
