Description:

Expand your expertise at a national regulator

Why join us?
We are the UK’s independent nuclear regulator, dedicated to keeping the UK’s nuclear industry safe and secure. We invest in our people to build capability and resilience within our great teams, underpinned by our inherent focus on inclusion and excellence. Our values, ‘supportive, open-minded, fair and accountable,’ shape how we work. Use your professional expertise to make a positive impact. Be part of a team committed to being a modern, transparent regulator delivering trusted outcomes and value. And, support our mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. As a Nuclear Safety Inspector – Radiation Protection, you’ll be at the heart of what we do, with every opportunity to develop your knowledge and make a difference too.

What you’ll be doing:
The nuclear industry is evolving fast – and you’ll be central to its transformation. Your work will be critical to the decarbonisation of the UK’s economy; our national defence; and the decommissioning of our nuclear legacy.

As a Radiation Protection Inspector, you’ll see that people are protected from the radiation arising on the wide range of UK nuclear sites and during the transport of radioactive materials. You’ll specialise in radiological impact and consequences assessment, which includes identifying the significant hazards on nuclear sites, working with fault analysis colleagues, and evaluating the potential radiological consequences to workers and the public.

There will also be the chance to support emergency responses to Government requests relating to overseas events such as Fukushima and Ukraine.
With this variety of tasks, you can widen your influence and make a difference in radiation protection throughout the nuclear industry. Work can include assessment, compliance inspection, producing in-house guidance, training fellow inspectors, working with professional bodies and institutions to develop good practice nationally and internationally, working with government to develop or revise legislation, and representing ONR/UK internationally.

Rest assured that we’ll provide extensive training on the legal and regulatory aspects of the role, along with opportunities to continue to develop, expand and deepen knowledge in this specialist area and on a range of nuclear technologies.

What do you need to be great for this role?
As a Nuclear Safety Inspector, you’ll have a degree (or equivalent) in a Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related discipline. You will also have specialist knowledge and experience of radiological protection. This should cover the application of radiological protection principles and dose optimisation techniques, and dose consequence analysis related to postulated fault sequences. You should also be adept at preparing safety cases and risk assessments.

However, if you don’t have a background in the nuclear industry or another high hazard sector, or you only have some (limited) experience in radiological impact/ consequences assessment, your application will still be welcome. We’re happy to provide structured training as long as you’re keen to learn.

Whatever the level of your technical expertise, you will need the ability to communicate clearly with a range of contacts, judge complex technical issues, and influence others.

Membership of a relevant professional body would be an advantage.
