Thomas Thor is working in partnership with Rolls-Royce SMR to recruit a Group Head of SMR Build, Construction, Installation & Assembly who will be accountable for delivering all the construction, capability, connectivity and build processes required for the SMR unit build for installation & assembly.

The Role

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will lead the development and deployment of world class manufacturing processes, methods, technologies and systems within the business ensuring that they fully support the SMR designs, safety and security cases and overall business case and delivery timelines.

You will be accountable for the leadership, strategy and integration of all construction, installation and assembly activities within the RRSMR unit build, including alignment to the delivery model of installation & assembly.

Location: flexible with hybrid working arrangements in place (offices in Manchester, Warrington, Derby).

Responsibilities

  • To mature the innovations and designs of the manufacturing methods and solutions for construction, assembly and installation of a Nuclear Power station, ensuring they support the detailed design concepts, safety and security cases, confidence in build certainty and remain aligned with overall Programme delivery timelines
  • Ability to co-ordinate a team of installation engineers and create installation work instructions from Design intent to working instructions for installation and assembly of a Nuclear power station.
  • Agrees build sequence and methods and resultant schedule
  • Constructs the site logistics design and development for sequence of work to be as smooth as possible
  • Responsible of the overall construction management plans and provide that support to the wider business to ensure the design is developed with design for construction embedded.
  • Produce and deliver an integrated installation capability development plan in support installation and assembly method development, delivering the installation capability development, including supporting digital capabilities, to plan up to and including first production-ready capability (MCRL 6 equivalence) for critical path installation methods
  • Develop the construction detailed design, demonstrating the capability to deliver an industrialised production process capability of achieving SMR requirements for safety, quality, production rate and delivery confidence
  • Recruit to plan, on-board and train SQEP installation engineering resources
  • Ability to select key SQEP suppliers who are capable of writing installation method instructions
  • Ensure the effective deployment of Technical Authority and Governance on all technical changes and compliance to Design Intent and Engineering Standards

Requirements

  • Experience of complex installation on platforms for Oil & Gas or other complex modular build is highly desirable
  • Demonstrable track record of leading large teams in a complex engineering environment
  • Understanding of welding techniques of pipes and electrical connectively and installation
  • Understanding of AMSE quality standards and international NDT regulatory standards
  • Good overview of a digital twin and ERP systems to assist the assembly build process
  • Proven track record of major infrastructure programme delivery
  • Nuclear experience desirable but not essential
