Contract Opportunity: Principal Mechanical Engineer
Location: North West (Hybrid - 1 day remote)
Contract Length: 12 months (with strong likelihood of extension)
Rate: Up to 60 per hour (Outside IR35)
Hours: 4-day week (Monday to Thursday, 10-hour days)


We are currently recruiting for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and delivery of complex, high-integrity mechanical systems within the nuclear sector. This role offers the chance to take technical ownership of key projects and contribute to nationally significant work.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the mechanical engineering delivery across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with nuclear and safety standards.
  • Provide technical oversight of mechanical designs, calculations, and documentation.
  • Conduct and lead design reviews, optioneering, and hazard studies (e.g., HAZOP, ALARP).
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and contribute to the development of internal capability.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, and regulatory stakeholders.


Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong background in mechanical engineering within the nuclear industry.
  • Extensive experience in the design and delivery of safety-critical mechanical systems.
  • Glovebox design experience is highly desirable.
  • Familiar with engineering standards and regulatory requirements in nuclear projects (e.g., AWE, Sellafield).
  • Live Security Clearance (SC) is a significant advantage.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
