Westlakes Recruit are currently recruiting for an Electrical Engineer. Candidates can be based in either Derby, Warrington, Bolton, Sunderland, Glasgow, or Bristol and will be engaged on a permanent basis.
Role Purpose Provide engineering expertise in the design, analysis and verification of electrical systems used across nuclear facilities. The role supports new build, operational plant upgrades and decommissioning projects. The engineer ensures electrical designs are safe, compliant and integrated effectively with control, protection and mechanical systems throughout the lifecycle. Key Responsibilities
- Develop electrical system designs including single line diagrams, load schedules, cable routing, earthing and bonding arrangements and equipment specifications.
- Produce design documentation such as electrical calculations, protection schemes, coordination studies, panel designs and installation drawings.
- Interpret and apply nuclear safety requirements, ensuring electrical systems support reliability, maintainability and defence in depth.
- Undertake power system studies including load flow, fault level analysis, discrimination and arc flash assessments where required.
- Select appropriate electrical equipment including LV/MV switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, motors, drives and distribution components suited for nuclear environments.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards such as BS EN 61508, BS 7671, IEC 60364 and nuclear site-specific requirements.
- Collaborate with EC&I, control systems, mechanical, civil and safety engineers to ensure integration across interfaces.
- Support electrical aspects of instrumentation and control systems including power supplies, segregation, EMC considerations and environmental qualification.
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, failure mode assessments and engineering substantiation activities.
- Provide support during manufacturing, FAT, SAT and commissioning, resolving electrical design issues and ensuring traceability to requirements.
Essential Skills and Experience (Encourage to apply even if they have some but not all of these)
- Proven electrical engineering experience in a regulated or safety critical industry, ideally nuclear, defence or energy.
- Good understanding of electrical distribution systems, protection principles and installation practices.
- Experience producing key electrical deliverables such as SLDs, cable calculations, equipment specifications and protection settings.
- Familiarity with nuclear design expectations including safety classification, redundancy, segregation and qualification requirements.
- Knowledge of relevant UK and international standards (BS 7671, IEC/BS EN standards, ENA documents etc.).
- Good communication skills and experience working in multi-disciplinary project teams.
Qualifications Desirable
- Ability to work with power system modelling tools such as ETAP, Amtech, EasyPower or similar.
- Experience in nuclear new build, plant life extension or decommissioning.
- Understanding of C&I power supply design, UPS selection and battery sizing.
- Knowledge of EMC, lightning protection and protective earthing schemes in nuclear facilities.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.
- Experience reviewing vendor packages and performing technical bid evaluations.
