Our client is a leading lab-based testing partner to companies operating in the world's most highly-regulated industries. They are one of the fastest growing testing, inspection and certification businesses in the world. They are seeking a qualified and motivated MPI & FPI Technician to join their inspection team supporting the aerospace and casting industries at their laboratory in Birmingham. This is a Monday to Friday based role, with morning and afternoon shifts (AM / PM).

Role Overview

The MPI & FPI Technician performs non-destructive testing (NDT) using magnetic particle and fluorescent penetrant inspection techniques to identify surface and near-surface discontinuities in components, materials and assemblies. The role ensures inspections are completed safely, accurately and in accordance with approved procedures, customer requirements, applicable standards and the organisation's quality system. Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) in accordance with approved written instructions, techniques and acceptance criteria.
  • Review job instructions, drawings, specifications and inspection plans before commencing work, escalating unclear or conflicting requirements.
  • Prepare components and test surfaces, select suitable consumables and equipment, and verify that environmental and viewing conditions meet procedural requirements.
  • Set up, operate and check MPI equipment, UV-A lamps, light meters and associated inspection equipment within the limits of certification and authorisation.
  • Apply the correct inspection sequence, interpret relevant indications and distinguish reportable discontinuities from non-relevant or false indications.
  • Accurately record inspection results, equipment details, consumable batch information and process parameters to maintain full traceability.
  • Produce clear inspection reports and promptly communicate non-conformances, unusual indications or technical concerns to the responsible Level 3, supervisor or customer representative.
  • Maintain control of calibrated equipment and consumables, completing routine performance checks and reporting defects or out-of-tolerance conditions.
  • Follow health, safety, environmental and radiation or chemical-control requirements relevant to the work area, including correct use of personal protective equipment.
  • Support audits, technical reviews, continuous-improvement activities and the investigation of quality issues.
  • Protect customer assets, confidential information and intellectual property at all times.
  • Maintain personal certification, vision-test status, training records and technical competence.

Qualifications & ExperienceEssential

  • Current Level 2 or Level 1 certification in Magnetic Particle Testing and Penetrant Testing under a recognised scheme applicable to the work performed, such as ISO 9712 / PCN, NAS 410 or ASNT employer-based certification.
  • Practical experience performing MPI and FPI in an industrial, manufacturing, aerospace, energy, automotive, rail or similar safety-critical environment.
  • Ability to read and apply NDT procedures, engineering drawings, specifications and acceptance criteria.
  • Good understanding of surface preparation, process control, inspection sensitivity, defect types and relevant indication evaluation.
  • Ability to complete accurate technical records and reports in English.
  • Valid near-vision and colour-perception examinations appropriate to the certification scheme.
  • Strong commitment to safe working, quality, integrity and procedural compliance.

Desirable

  • Additional NDT certification, such as Visual Testing, Ultrasonic Testing or Eddy Current Testing.
  • Experience working within ISO/IEC 17020, ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 9001, EN 9100 or another regulated quality environment.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry codes and customer specifications.
  • Experience using digital inspection-reporting or quality-management systems.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites.
