Our role matters – and so will yours Why join us? We are the UK’s independent nuclear regulator, dedicated to keeping the UK’s nuclear industry safe and secure. We invest in our people to build capability and resilience within our great teams, underpinned by our inherent focus on inclusion and excellence. Our values, ‘supportive, open-minded, fair and accountable,’ shape how we work. Use your professional expertise to make a positive impact. Be part of a team committed to being a modern, transparent regulator delivering trusted outcomes and value. And, support our mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. As a Nuclear Safety Inspector – Chemistry, you’ll work across the nuclear industry, gaining expertise as you progress. What you’ll be doing: The nuclear industry is evolving fast – and you’ll be central to its transformation. Your work will be critical to the decarbonisation of the UK’s economy; our national defence; and the decommissioning of our nuclear legacy. As a Chemistry Inspector, you’ll be part of a friendly, specialist team that examines the chemistry aspects and challenges of the design, construction, operation and decommissioning of civil nuclear reactors as well as fuel cycle facilities. For this work you’ll need expert judgment in relation to minimisation of material degradation (including fuel clad), source terms and radioactive waste production. Working knowledge of accident chemistry effects, mitigations and chemistry modelling techniques would be an advantage. With this variety of tasks, you can widen your influence and make a difference in Chemistry throughout the nuclear industry. Work can include assessment, compliance inspection, producing in-house guidance, training fellow inspectors, working with professional bodies and institutions to develop good practice nationally and internationally, working with government to develop or revise legislation, and representing ONR/UK internationally. Rest assured that we’ll provide extensive training on the legal and regulatory aspects of the role, along with opportunities to continue to develop, expand and deepen knowledge in this specialist area and on a range of nuclear technologies. What do you need to be great for this role? As a Nuclear Safety Inspector, you’ll have a degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, or a related discipline. Ideally, you’ll also have knowledge of chemistry in relation to the design, construction, commissioning, operation, decommissioning and accident conditions for reactors and fuel cycle facilities. A background in the nuclear industry or a high hazard industry would therefore be necessary. However, if you don’t have a background in the nuclear industry or another high hazard sector, your application will still be welcome. We’re happy to provide structured training as long as you’re keen to learn. Whatever the level of your technical expertise, you will need the ability to communicate clearly with a range of contacts, judge complex technical issues, and influence others. Membership of a relevant professional body would be an advantage. Pay, Benefits, Culture Our people’s dedication to public safety and security is central to the delivery of our commitments to the public we serve. We therefore offer competitive salaries, with this role attracting a salary of £80,670 - £96,883 and a Civil Service Pension with an average employer contribution of 27%.
