Description:

We seek an experienced and enthusiastic mechanical technician to supervise our mechanical workshop facilities, which design and manufacture of a wide range of equipment for the Radiotherapy Service. Additionally, you will participate in planned preventative maintenance and repairs of complex mechanical systems on Radiotherapy Linear Accelerators and CT- Scanners.

You will be working closely with our team of electronics engineers to minimise machine downtime, supervising other technical specialists, as well as the department's mechanical workshop facilities, ensuring high standards of safety and accountability.

Ideally you will be educated to HNC/HND or BSc level and have an apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering / Toolmaking, with a minimum of 10 extra years' experience in a mechanical workshop environment, or have undertaken a nationally recognised form of vocational training in mechanical engineering. Previous supervisory experience in a hospital engineering environment is desirable.

You must have experience with a full range of workshop equipment, processes and precision engineering techniques including; CAD/solid modelling software, CNC milling and turning and be able to apply yourself to the design, construction and repair of specialist equipment.

Experience with MIG/TIG welding processes would be desirable as well as knowledge and experience of 3D Printer work design.

You will maintain ISO9001 and compliance with MDR.

Main duties of the job
  • To ensure the Mechanical Engineering Workshop provides a timely, efficient and effective maintenance and repair service to the Trust's Radiotherapy Department across all sites.
  • To undertake the design, development and /or modification of radiotherapy equipment, ensuring such equipment meets the needs of the Radiotherapy Department and provides optimum conditions for the treatment of cancer patients.
  • To design and develop equipment for scientific/clinical research, or quality assurance as requested by members of staff or other Trust departments in order to improve patient treatment or experience.
  • To ensure members of the workshop team comply with the legislation and guidance relating to: both the engineering workshop and workshop equipment; plus the Ionising Radiation Regulations; the Ionising (Medical Exposure) Regulations; and the Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • To ensure clients have been informed of the cost of the work to be produced, how they will be invoiced, and they have funds available.
  • To undergo both internal & external training to maintain status as a competent mechanical technician.
  • To maintain a safe environment for the team and others by observing best practise, following procedures and knowledge of the health & safety legislation.

Person Specification Education/ Qualifications
  • BSc / BEng / HNC / Full Technical Certificate or equivalent qualification / experience in mechanical or production engineering.
  • An apprenticeship or nationally recognised course of vocational training in mechanical or production engineering.
  • A knowledge of mechanical or production engineering processes and the equipment used in the manufacture of engineered items.
  • Certified as legally competent to change Abrasive Wheels as per the Abrasive Wheel Regulations.
  • A knowledge of the Planned Preventative Maintenance required for Linear Accelerators
  • Membership of a recognised & relevant Professional Engineering Institute
  • Incorporated-level Engineer.
Experience
  • Extensive knowledge of: materials; material processing; mechanical engineering design; equipment manufacture and repair; involving the use of Lathes, Milling Machines, Welding Equipment, etc.
  • Previous experience of longterm Planned Preventative Maintenance programmes
  • Understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions required when dealing with: fumes, oils, solvents, compressed gases, working in confined spaces, working at height, lifting of very heavy items (up to 1,000 Kg), tools and torches at highly elevated temperatures, cleansing agents, naked flames, machine cutters and components rotating at very high speeds
  • Experienced in the safe use of lifting equipment (cranes, strops, slings, block & tackle, etc.) to move very heavy items weighting up to 1,000 Kg.
  • Practical experience of working on Health & Safety issues
  • Auditor for ISO 9000 Quality Management System
  • Knowledge of Electricity at Work Regulations, Ionising Radiation Regulations, Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations
Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities
  • Highly experienced in the use of: lathes; drills; milling machines; grinders, welding and brazing equipment.
  • Highly conversant with CAD packages for the development of drawings and illustrations. Ability to use CAD/CAM systems and will have worked on CNC machinery (lathes / milling machines).
  • Able to use Word and Excel for the development of procedures, policies and spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, eg: Health & Safety at Work Regulations, Factories Act, Offices Shops & Railway Premises Act, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences Regulations, Public Liability Act & ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System
  • Highly experienced in the use of: lathes; drills; milling machines; grinders, welding and brazing equipment
  • Highly conversant with VISIO 2000 or similar CAD package for the development of drawings and illustrations. Ability to use CAD/CAM systems and will have worked on CNC machinery (lathes / milling machines).
